The iPad2 and the original iPad has a Side Switch which allows you to either lock the rotation of the iPad or mute any sound coming from it. This feature is usually defaulted at muting sound, but this can be changed to your preference.

How do I change my Side Switch preference
You can change the side switch by going into the Settings. Here are the instructions for changing the side switch function:
1) Tap the “Home” button or pinch with four fingers to return to the home screen
2) Tap “Settings” app icon
3) Go to “General” and look for “Use Side Switch to:”
4) Here you can choose either “Lock Rotation” or “Mute” depending on which you want to use.
