Best iPad apps for Buying a House
Purchasing a home is the largest financial decision most people make. While looking for your new house, bring along the iPad as a reference or research tool. The iPad is a great platform to carry around during open houses and driving around a new neighborhood. While we are not suggesting you forego the use of a real estate professional or lawyer, we do recommend downloading the apps below as an independent source of information to make the right decision.
Trulia allows you to search for homes for sale as well as apartment rentals across the US. You can customize your search by price, number of bedrooms/bathrooms, square feet, recent price reductions, and more. Trulia also allows you to search for open houses, helping you plan a weekend of open houses. The iPad app allows you view full screen, high resolution listing as well as providing the listing agents contact information.
Zillow is similar to Trulia allowing you to view current home listings. Zillow’s claim to fame is its Z-estimate algorithm. While not always accurate, Zillow can give you an estimate on the true worth of the property based on recent and similar sales of homes in the target properties neighborhood. What I found most useful about Zillow is the mortgage rates tool, which gives you a list of lenders and the prevailing rates in your area.
Houzz Interior Design Ideas is one of my favorite apps in the iTunes store. Think of Houzz as an encyclopedia of home improvement and design ideas. Houzz iPad app gives you access to over 150,000 high resolution photos. You can browse photos by room, location, product and more. A digital scrapbook allows you to keep your ideas organized.
Walkscore is a GPS powered iPhone app that can run on the iPad. It ranks neighborhoods by walk-ability. More importantly, it allows you explore a new neighborhood based on the ability to get around by foot. It lists amenities such as restaurants, entertainment venues, shopping, and more.
Yelp is a user provided opinion site on local restaurants and businesses. Get the scoop on what the locals in your area love to go!
This is a free calculator app that figures out your monthly payment and more. The app allows you to figure in other expenses such as property taxes, HOA, etc. to come up with your monthly payment. An amortization table is provided to show you principle, interest, payment, and balance.
